A Parade in Mill Lane, home of many Welwyn’s soldiers
Welwyn in World War I
Alongside the stories of Welwyn’s soldiers, survivors or lost there is the wider story of the village in the years between 1914 and 1918.
On reading Trade Directories for 1914 and 1918 one might be forgiven for imagining that little happened to Welwyn between those years. Many of the residents’ names, the tradesmen and institutions seem unchanged. But this can only be a superficial judgement as Welwyn, as much as anywhere else, felt the effect of four years of war.
These pages attempt to tell a wider story of Welwyn and it’s families during those years and after.
